There’s heaps of broadband speed tests out there. This one is listed as a speed test application for the iPhone.
When run at my desk, it reports
Results: 997.5 kbps
Not an iPhone
That’s just under 1 Megabit per second (about 220Kbytes per second)
When I ran it on my O2 EDGE connection, it reported:
Results: 324.4 kbps
That’s slightly slower than low end domestic broadband (about 40Kbytes per second)
Anyone else fancy reporting the speeds they get from their provider?

Weird Result
On Wifi 497 kbps
Edge 336 kbps
Strange as my Mac Book Pro on the same wireless connection is getting 3300 kbps. I tried it a few times and same result.

Reason being: slower processor, slower interconnections inside, slower disk storage
But interesting to note that there’s not a world of difference between EDGE and low end broadband…..and not much difference with the iPhone between EDGE and WiFi.
I’d guess that the WiFi should be lower latency though

I take your point about the iPhone having slower components however the difference between 3300 kbps and 497kbps seems a lot on the same wifi connection. The bandwidth is available and your test shows it is possible for the iPhone to achieve 997 kbps I just wonder why I can only achieve 497 kbps. I will try it out over a couple of days to see what happens, it may have been that the speed test server was getting slammed at the time I was doing it.

Fair point. MY own results for WiFi on the iPhone seems to max out at about 800Kbits on average over WiFi. My line, on the other hand, is a 1Mbps symmetrical line. Take a few stabs at it and see what happens.

Hi Guys
I need an internet provider for my home. Cable isn’t an opp so I can only use a phone line. Can anyone suggest a provider that has good upload speed (had heard of BT doing 1 down 1up), good price and good cust service?
Let me know

Depends what you’re willing to pay. I use NTRBroadband but they’re not cheap. you’d need to look at sites like http://www.adslguide.org.uk/ to see if they can provide reviews.

At the Ulster Hospital, there’s no EDGE or public wifi but the speed recorded is 112.7
We can only hope the McDs across the road gets free wifi soon!
but overall it is servicable especially for RSS
