NiMUG event calendar up! IBM migrating staff to Macs…
Apr 03

We’re having our April meeting on Monday the 21st.

The venue is Windsor Lawn Tennis Club which is located on Windsor Avenue in Belfast. There’s plenty of parking and you enter in through the main doors and come to the downstairs meeting room. It’s quite exposed and not large but we need to get an idea of the numbers before we book the bigger room upstairs. We’ll definitely have tables, WiFi and seats. Mac-Sys did buy a Projector we can borrow as well. The meeting will starts at 7 pm and we’ll aim to finish up at 9 pm. The format is still very fast and loose. We still want volunteers to give demos. The turnout will be the best gauge of success!

Agenda

  • A General Hello
  • Macs for Photography - a demo of Apple’s Aperture and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom from Ian Moran of Konnexion.
  • Xcake - a meeting held on 2nd April about being a Mac programmer
  • Apple Stores in Belfast update. End of the summer?
  • Questions? Ideas? Wrap-up

Special thanks to Victor for arranging this and we’d remind everyone that this meeting is on the 21st!

We’re intending all future meetings to be on the third Monday of every month. All at Windsor Lawn Tennis Club.

Demo Details

Special Thanks to Ian (ianm on the discussions) for volunteering for this demo. Photography is no longer the remit of the specialist and the professional but also the amateur and the prosumer. Cameras have come down in price and increased in features. This demo will be about two competing pieces of software which dominate the photography category.

XCake - started as a splinter group from Belfast Open Coffee, they had their first meeting on 2nd April, for the appreciation of XCode (the development environment for Mac OS X) and Cake (the delicious kind). Hopefully someone from the group will be able to turn up and give a precis.

    I will be attending.

  2. Johnathan Says:

Any age limit or anything, or do I have to bring anything, I’m 15 BTW incase that’s a problem.

  3. szlwzl Says:

    I’ll be there as well.

  4. MattJ Says:

There is no age limit though we’d prefer juniors to be accompanied - it’s a tennis club after all. We don’t charge membership fees either.

    At 9, we close up!

  5. icedcoffee Says:

As a very new Mac user and photographer I am very much looking forward to this!

  6. ianm Says:

Matt what’s the format for this ? I’ll bring a 17″ MacBook Pro - just gather around that ? Could bring the 24″ iMac if you think that would be better although that’s more hassle obviously.

  7. MattJ Says:

Bring the MacBook Pro and we’ll hook it up to the projector.

  8. MattJ Says:

As it happens, I’m not going to make it but others will be there. Babies need sitting upon.

  9. ianm Says:

The colour management article I referenced tonight - excellent read ..

Illustrates very nicely why all photographers should have Safari on their desktop.

Thanks for coming folks, enjoyable night.

Thanks all, i really enjoyed this evening. Thanks to Ian and Walter who I had in depth discussions with.
Think I might reinstall osx later…

  11. MattJ Says:

Congrats to Walter for that Photo competition win!

Any suggestions for a demo next month? Something with less depth? anyone want to show off IMovie 8?

  12. ianm Says:

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom ? Happy to run through this at a future meeting as we ran out of time last night.

“We’re excited to announce that the Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® 2.0 beta is available for download to valued customers like you. We hope you take this opportunity to experience the new and improved functionality in the latest version of Photoshop Lightroom, which will be the first Adobe application to provide 64-bit support for OS X 10.5 Intel Macs and Microsoft Vista 64-bit operating systems.

Here’s a sampling of what you’ll experience when you download the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.0 beta:
    • With Localized Corrections, photographers can now enhance targeted and specific areas of an image for unsurpassed flexibility and control. For example, darken only the sky in a landscape photo, or sharpen only the eyes in a portrait.
    • An improved layout in the Library module allows for a more intuitive approach to image organisation.
    • Smart Collections automatically updates collections with images that match desired criteria such as star-rating, keyword or other metadata.
    • Suggested Keywords eases the task of keywording by making recommendations based on keyword associations.
    • Additionally, you get support for a dual monitor configuration; the ability to correct specific parts of an image without affecting other areas; dodge and burn using the same non-destructive approach; and much more.
Don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity to experience why Adobe Photoshop Lightroom – more than ever – is the essential toolbox for managing, adjusting and presenting large volumes of digital photographs.”

Enjoyable evening with a very interesting briefing on Aperture from ianm. Thanks for that.
High on my list of must-sees, is a similarly informative brief around iMovie. Hope someone can share their knowledge with this newbie!

  14. MattJ Says:

Ian - I would be very grateful if you’d do the same for Lightroom next month.

After that we’d definitely get an iMovie tutorial together.
    Then maybe some Final Cut..

  15. ianm Says:

No problem. Are we talking 19th May ?

  16. icedcoffee Says:

Oh but i can’t afford a video camera right now, and i know a talk on imovie is gonna make me want to get one right away/have one beforehand! It is my next big purchase though (after possibly a holiday).

(should hitting tab from this window select the ’submit comment’ button? my mac doesnt…)
