The iPhone 3G is due to be released on the 11th July and will be available to existing iPhone customers as well as new customers.
Two reports from the two O2 stores in Bangor (Main street and Bloomfields) agree that they will not be dealing with existing iPhone customers looking to upgrade to iPhone 3G for an estimated two weeks. The stores will only be dealing with new signups. Both of them said (separately) that existing iPhone customers who expressed interest would be posted a new iPhone after being called in early July and agreeing to a new 18 month contract. This means that existing iPhone customers would be very unlikely to receive the iPhone on day one.
Both of these stores were likely O2 franchises and not necessarily O2 corporate or O2 retail. So I rang O2’s specialist iPhone support line and they just read the content of O2’s web page back at me.
Andy McMillan posts that the Castle Lane, Belfast O2 store will accept applications from the 4th July and people who register (first come, first served) will receive their iPhone 3G on the 11th July. The O2 store in Castlecourt says that first-time customer will be served on the 11th July, upgrading customers will have to wait a week.
Do you have anything to add from your local O2 store?

That would be good news but I’m having trouble believing that O2 would post out iPhones. Roll on 4th July!

Im with O2 online and I have registered interest online and have received a text today saying:
We will text you shortly before (11/07) with order details. As demand is very high, orders will be on first come first served basis.
Which leads me to believe they could sell out quickly???
Also, they posted me my 2G iPhone so I expect the same procedure this time. I don’t see how they can say order online but physically walk to a store to get the phone.

I also got a text today as did others though the messages were definitely the same, the text sent was very different.

My iphone 3G arrived from O2 via DHL on friday as promised. Only problem was no SIM was sent in the box. Had to buy a sim from the carphone warehouse in forestside. Called O2 and they were cool about it. They refunded the £15 onto my account but also said that 100’s had been sent out without sims!

Yep. Mine arrived by dhl on Friday too. As it was an upgrade I just moved my sim from iphone 2.5 to iphone 3g. 3G coverage where i live is non-existent though which kind of sucks but software 2.0 is great.
