You can open some Word documents in Appleworks 6. Use the ‘Open’ option from the file menu, and where the File Format drop down says ‘Appleworks’, change it to ‘All Available’. You will then be able to open .doc documents. It will not work with .docx documents, but neither will any but the latest versions of Word
Can it sync with Google calendars over the internet? If so, you can publish your calendars in iCal, subscribe to them in your Google calendar and then sync that with your phone.
You could try it, and re-install the shipped operating system if problems occur, but I guess you would want a cast iron guarantee that it would work if you had to run QuarkXPress 7. You could, of course, upgrade to version 8, if you had a few hundred quid to spareā¦
I would head to Maplins and see what they have to offer. I suspect that there are issues with all makes of HD. I had a Hitachi drive fail on me once, but still have two installed at present, which are working fine. I had the same model computer as you, and a 250Gb drive will be fine.
Make sure you connect the new HD to the ATA/100 bus for maximum speed throughput, especially as you will be using it for video. This is the carriage at the rear of the machine, not the one underneath the optical drives, which only has an ATA/66 bus.
The new version of Quicktime has the facility to make a screen recording, if that would suffice. Maybe the resultant movie could have audio added in iMovie, if sound is needed?
That part of the crash log doesn’t seem particularly relevant to Illustrator, does it?
I’m out of ideas, so maybe someone else can take up the gauntlet on this one. I would just say that a web search showed some of the same issues that you have been dealing with. Some people found that trashing all files with Illustrator in the name and re-installing did the trick, but I suggest you have a look for yourself and see which situation most closely resembles your own before going down that path.
My next thought would be a corrupted font. Try disabling most of the fonts except system ones (using Font Book, if that app exists in 10.4). If Illustrator starts, then it is simply (!) a case of working out which font is corrupted.
Also, you could open Console and see what the crash logs say. They might point you in the right direction.
Have you tried deleting (or simply moving to a different location) the preference files for Illustrator? Occasionally these files can get corrupted. They will be located in ~yourusername/Library/Preferences/. (On my machine, with Illustrator CS 3 installed, there are two folders of files in /Adobe Illustrator CS3 Settings/ and /Adobe Illustrator CS3 Library Settings/) You could try moving those folders onto your desktop, then starting Illustrator, which should create new ones in the /Preferences folders. If this does not help, then the moved folders can simply be replaced again, with no further harm done.
Is the install disc for 10.5.0, or a later incarnation of Leopard. I was unable to install Leopard onto my (albeit Intel) machine with the 10.5.0 disc. I seem to recall it being an issue with not having the driver for a newer video card on the disc. 10.5.5 could be installed. Perhaps your problem is something similar?
